frequently asked warranty questions

General Maintenance

To remain under warranty, where should I get my vehicle serviced?

  • We suggest going to your local Kia dealership for all maintenance related work. Book an appointment here.
  • All warranty work needs to be diagnosed and repaired at a Kia Canada authorized dealership. Dealer locator.
  • Kia dealers know Kia vehicles best, including having all the proper specialty tools to get the job done right, the first time!

To remain under warranty, what should I get serviced?

  • Orangeville Kia would recommend the following Maintenance Schedule.
  • To ensure your warranty remains valid, please refer to Section 8 of your Owner's Manual as it outlines your model's specific maintenance intervals.
  • Canada is categorized as an 'Extreme Weather Climate' due to the highs and lows of our seasonal temperatures, and the use of salt & sand on roads.
  • Your local Kia dealer may make recommendations above and beyond the service items required to maintain a valid warranty. These recommendations are made as to maximize your vehicle's health past the end of warranty!

How do I know what ______ is used for my vehicle? [Bulbs/Fluids/Wipers/Tires/Etc.]

  • Information pertaining to replacement/maintenance components for your vehicle is listed under Section 9 in your Owner's Manual.
  • Please ensure that the information is pertaining to your vehicle's specific configuration as a model can come with multiple engine/transmission configurations that may have differing specifications.

What should I be checking on my vehicle between service visits?

  • Check engine oil. [Recommendation: Every fuel fill-up]
  • Check engine coolant reserve tank level. [Recommendation: Monthly]
  • Top up windshield washer fluid [Recommendation: Every fuel fill-up]
  • Check tire pressure. [Recommendation: Visual, each time driving. Tested: Monthly]
  • Check your lights are working. [Recommendation: Monthly]

What do I have to do to get my vehicle ready for Winter?

  • Install your winter tires. [Not required in Ontario]
  • Check your tire pressure as temperatures fluctuate.
  • Change to 'Winter' windshield washer fluid. Winter washer fluid has anti-freeze in it to prevent a frozen/damaged system!
  • Have your vehicle's battery tested. A lack of Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) will result in a no-start condition during Winter weather.
  • Ensure you have an ice scraper in your vehicle. [Gloves recommended too!]
  • Recommend installing 'Beam style' wiper blades to minimize ice issues.
  • Install a remote starter. Contact us with your VIN for pricing information
  • Install All-Weather Liners. Check with our Parts department for availability

Tires & Brakes

How often should I have my alignment inspected?

  • We recommend checking your alignment at least every 30,000km/15 months, as well anytime you install new tires.
  • A check will determine the caster, camber and toe of your tires and compares to factory specifications.
  • The technician will make recommendations based on the results of the alignment check.
  • Improper alignment can cause uneven or rapid tire wear, vehicle pulling to the left or right, crooked steering wheel when driving straight, squealing tires and decreased fuel efficiency.

How often and why do I need to rotate my tires?

  • Your vehicle's tires should to be rotated every 10,000-12,000km [Every other oil change].
  • You rotate your tires regularly as your front tires wear faster than the rears. To keep the wear even, we rotate.
  • The front tires wear faster as they are responsible for transmitting acceleration (in a FWD), steering and most of the braking forces.
  • Failure to rotate regularly will cause uneven/premature wear. Check out this video for more information on common tire problems.
  • Rotating alone is not enough; make sure to have an alignment check performed!

How often do I need to balance my tires?

  • Your vehicle's tires should be balanced only when experiencing a vibration when driving.
  • Wheel vibration can lead to premature tire wear or costly mechanical failures of steering and suspension components.
  • There are many causes of wheel vibrations, but the common are: ice/dirt buildup, missing weight, deformed tire or bent rim.

When do I install/remove my Winter Tires?

  • Winter tires should be installed when the average temperature is 7°C (44.6°F) or colder; and removed when the average temperature is 7°C (44.6°F) or warmer.
  • Exposing your Winter Tires to excessive heat won't cause them to melt, but rather rubber compounds to harden, minimizing winter performance.
  • Insurance companies offer rate discounts for driver's that install Winter Tires; refer to your policy terms to determine when they need to be installed.
  • We offer competitive rates on Snow Tire Packages for any vehicle!
  • We offer Seasonal Tire Storage, contact our Service Department to inquire about up-to-date pricing!

How often and why do I need to service my brakes?

  • Your vehicle's braking system should be disassembled and serviced every 1 year or 24,000km [whichever comes first].
  • You need to service your brakes regularly as over time the lubrication will get washed away or become too dirty, which leads to the pads binding.
  • When pads are binding, their ability to return to their normal static position is limited, which is like driving with one foot on the gas pedal and the other on the brake.
  • Possible effects of lack of servicing: decreased fuel efficiency, decreased brake pad and rotor life expectancy, uneven pad wear, warped rotors, damaged caliper.
  • If you hear squealing or other noises when applying the brakes, this is often a sign that a brake inspection for either servicing or replacement is required. Book an appointment!

How often should the brake fluid be replaced?

  • Recommended to be replaced every 2 years/48,000km or whenever major brake repacement is being performed.
  • Brake fluid is replaced regularly as it is hydroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture.
  • Excess moisture in the system can lead to decreased braking efficiency or even brake failure.

Filters, Fluids & Fuel

How often do I need to change the air filters in my Kia?

  • There are generally two air filters to maintain in your vehicle: Cabin and Engine.
  • Both filters are inspected regularly during routine maintenance (Service #1, 2 and/or 3) at Orangeville Kia.
  • Replacement is generally recommended once a year/24,000km, but based on visual inspection.
  • Replacement intervals can change based on driving conditions.
  • The engine air filter is located in the Engine bay; cabin air filter is located behind the Passenger glove box.

What is the Fuel Additive and why should it be used?

  • The additive helps clean, restore and protect the fuel system.
  • Important for GDI engines. Helps to prevent deposit formation.
  • Restores lost power and fuel economy caused by deposit build-up.
  • Improves cold start performance. Reduces rough idle, engine surge, and hesitation.
  • Use the additive every 12,000km by pouring it into your fuel tank after filling.

How often do I need to service the transmission?

  • Always refer to your Owner's Manual in regards to vehicle specific intervals.
  • Recommended interval for replacement under non-towing usage is every 4 year/96,000km.
  • Recommended to use Kia Genuine SP3 or SP4 Transmission Fluid.

What is the Fuel Induction service?

  • Maintains optimum performance, fuel efficiency & cleaner emissions.
  • Reduces intake valve and injector deposits.
  • A cleaning agent is administered through the fuel rail to provide maximum effect.
  • Fuel additive should be used between Fuel Induction services.
  • Recommended to be performed every 30,000km/15 months (whichever comes first).
How often should I get my Engine Coolant replaced?

  • For 2012 and newer vehicles, we recommend replacing the Engine Coolant every 96,000km/48 months (whichever comes first).
  • For 2012 and older vehicles, we recommend replacing the Engine Coolant every 48,000km/24 months (whichever comes first).
  • Coolant can become acidic over time and lose its rust-inhibiting properties, causing corrosion and damage.
  • Regular replacement helps prevent corrosion, as well as reduce sediment that may be accumulating in the system.

How often should I replace my Spark Plugs?

  • The recommended replacement interval for most engines/spark plugs is 144,000km/72 months.
  • The interval for Turbo engines is 72,000km/36 months. The interval for a 2011 or older Rio is 48,000km/24 months (Copper plug).
  • As spark plugs wear down, engine performance and gas mileage will begin to suffer.
  • Spark plugs not replaced regularly can seize in place causing additional labour to remove.
