Compared to Hybrid and EV versions of the 2025 Niro, quite a lot has changed, actually.
For the 2024 model year the PHEV only came in one trim level - EX. While it was value-packed and quite popular, like anything in life, nothing is one-size-fits-all. Because most people are looking for ways to save fuel and/or have a better green footprint, but can't logistically make an EV work, having more than one trim level was necessary.
As a result, for the 2025 model year Kia Canada will be introducing the Niro PHEV LX and PHEV EX Premium models, to slot into the lineup, below and above the EX, respectively.
Like the regular hybrid, the LX will be the entry-level base version, loaded with standard tech, comfort and safety features, making it feel anything but basic. The EX Premium will play to buyers who want a little more tech, compared to the EX, and can't live without a feature like a sunroof.
What hasn't changed is that, as of the writing for this, the $5,000 Federal Government iZEV Rebate is still very much in-play.
What exactly is a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)? It combines the best of both worlds: impressive hybrid fuel economy paired with electric range capability. Not everyone is ready (or able) to commit to a vehicle with electric-only range as the Canadian (and Ontario) charging infrastructural, while improving, isn't as robust as it needs to be yet, especially in rural communities, where distances between towns can be significant.
The PHEV is a smooth introduction into what an all-electric world is like with up to 53km of gas-free range (at 180hp and 195lb-ft torque) before flipping to gas/hybrid.
Level 1 (120V) or 2 (240V) chargers can be used to charge the Lithium Ion Polymer battery (Level 2 taking it from empty-to-full in under 3 hours). Forget to charge it, and you can simply fall back on gas/hybrid power until you can.
Niro PHEVs take their cue from the driver when to operate in EV mode, meaning you can push the vehicle to electric when your commutes best call for it. This effectively allows you to benefit from zero gas usage when conditions are optimal. As a result, if your drives don't often exceed 53km, you'll rarely see a gas pump.
A sophisticated exterior, optimized for minimal drag and maximized fuel economy, continues inside with a well-appointed interior full of soft-touch materials that are rarely found in the sub-compact class.
If you've grown accustomed to safety features in your daily driving, fret not, as the PHEV has a full suite of standard ones, helping it earn a 5-star safety rating.
